2026 U.S. Packaging Machinery Outlook: Automation Leads Investment

PMMI released its 2026 Packaging State of the Industry report on August 6, highlighting a U.S. packaging machinery market shaped by automation, equipment retrofits, workforce pressures and stronger demand for parts and services. PMMI – The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies released its 2026 Packaging State of the Industry report on August 6, 2026. The report reviews 2025 U.S. packaging machinery performance and provides forecasts through 2031, with particular attention to automation, equipment modernization, workforce challenges, material changes and aftermarket services.

According to PMMI, total U.S. domestic packaging machinery shipment value reached $11.7 billion in 2025. The report also identifies robotic palletizing, load stabilization, autonomous mobile robots, retrofit projects and asset-preservation strategies as important areas of investment. PMMI projects a 6.7% compound annual growth rate for U.S. palletizing and load stabilization equipment from 2025 through 2031.

Automation Is Moving Further Down the Packaging Line

One of the clearest messages in the report is that automation investment is no longer limited to the primary packaging machine itself. More manufacturers are looking at the full production flow, including conveying, case packing, palletizing, load handling and internal logistics. The International Federation of Robotics reported on June 18, 2026, that U.S. industrial robot installations increased 11% year over year to 38,000 units in 2025.
